Klopp would be great coach mentor: Gerrard

He recently had a promising conversation with Jurgen Klopp, and Steven Gerrard says he would relish the chance to start his coaching career under the tutelage of the revered Liverpool manager.

Intrigue surrounds Gerrard's future, after the former Liverpool and England skipper recently hinted he'll likely end his illustrious playing career after his 2016 Major League Soccer (MLS) campaign with LA Galaxy.

Gerrard himself isn't sure what "opportunities" will come his way, though he has been working through his coaching badges in the hope he will, at some point, land a job in the dugout.

And after a couple of weeks training back at Anfield during the MLS off-season, a role at his boyhood club is becoming more and more attractive.

One of the big drawcards for Gerrard is Klopp, appointed in October and regarded as one of the top coaches in Europe.

Gerrard is openly a fan, saying the former Borussia Dortmund manager would make an excellent mentor if he was to go from Liverpool player to manager as Kenny Dalglish and Bob Paisley have done in the past.

"He's a world-class manager," said Gerrard, who is in Australia to play an exhibition match with a Liverpool Legends team including Jamie Carragher and Robbie Fowler.

"Even in the two weeks when I trained with the team, I'm picking up things new when I'm 35 years of age.

"I don't play for Liverpool anymore, but you can certainly always learn off a coach and a person like Jurgen Klopp."

Gerrard said Liverpool have made it clear their talisman of 17 years will always be welcome back.

In what role is less clear.

"(But) I certainly had a positive conversation with Jurgen Klopp and he made me feel very welcome when I trained with the team."

The first thing that hits home for Gerrard though, is the question of whether he'll actually be any good.

The leap from player to coach has always been seen as risky, and often doesn't come off nearly as well as the Pep Guardiolas of the world.

"You see the reason why a lot of top players don't make a success as manager, because it's a completely different role," said Gerrard, who is also dabbling in TV commentary as a Champions League pundit for BT Sport.

"It's different from being a player to being in control.

"It's something you have to learn, you have to gain experience.

"The exciting thing is no one knows how good I'll be, we'll have to wait and see."

Gerrard will line up against the Australian legends at ANZ Stadium on Thursday night as part of a Liverpool Legends XI managed by former Reds manager Gerard Houllier.

He will then head straight back to Los Angeles for pre-season training with Galaxy.
