Matildas star Samantha Kerr has been named Asian Football Confederation women's player of the year but former Socceroos mentor Ange Postecoglou has missed out in the coach's category.

Kerr has beaten out Japan's national captain Saki Kumagai and North Korean teen Sung Hyang Sim to collect the prestigious award at a gala ceremony in Bangkok.

"It's been a bit of a crazy year," Kerr said, before thanking her coaching staff and teammates.

Postecoglou and Japan's Masatada Ishii were pipped by Ishii's countryman Takafumi Hori.
