Jets can get even better: Kantarovski

Newcastle Jets utility Ben Kantarovski says the A-League surprise packets are ready to deal with increased expectations.

Four weeks into the new season and the Jets, the reigning A-League wooden spooners, have already matched last season's output of three wins with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Melbourne City on Friday night.

Newcastle now have an excellent opportunity to frank their progress over the next two weeks with home clashes against Western Sydney and Central Coast, two matches they will be expected to win.

Kantarovski, however, said the new-look Jets won't be weighed down by the favourites tag.

"We'll leave that to all the bookies. We'll concentrate on what we want to do in the game," he said.

"I think (people) underestimated us and that was their fault.

"They shouldn't have done that.

"We've worked on our game and we're going to keep working on our game, go out there and do what we've been doing for the last few weeks."

Kantarovski described Newcastle's start to the season as a mere "stepping stone" to where they want to be.

"We're only starting," he said.

"Newcastle's had a tough time for a little bit - not just the community, but the players as well.

"There's still a lot more to do for us within the community and on the field. (But) we're building as a team, slowly, and it's showing in our performances."

Playing in an unfamiliar attacking midfield role, Kantarovski scored the Jets' first goal against City, setting up his side for a successful second-half raid led by Milos Trifunovic, who bagged a brace.

Kantarovski could again find himself in the forward half of the pitch against the Wanderers, with Brazilian star Leonardo (knee) again in doubt.

"I haven't played there since JP (de Marigny) last coached me as a young boy," he said.

"Whatever the team needs from me, I'll be happy to do."
