Sports officiating is a tough gig and when mistakes occur it's best to remember that the men and women in the middle are human after all.

But some blunders simply beggar belief and deserve the wrath of fans and players, as was the case during a recent football match in Peru.

Primera Division teams Melgar and Sport Lorenzo were going head to head when Melgar midfielder Eduardo Uribe scored a brilliant, but flukey goal after beating the keeper with what appeared to be a miscued cross in the 11th minute.

But with Urite celebrating, referee Michael Espinoza ruled no goal when he noticed one of the linesmen had raised his flag to indicate the ball had rolled out before it was struck.

However, replays of the incident told a different story with Urite clearly kicking the ball at least 30cm from the goal line.

The call must rank as one of the worst ever linesman's blunders and cost Melgar victory with the match finishing 2-2.

Looks like someone needs to see an optometrist.
