Ronaldo injured as England, France win big

An injury to Cristiano Ronaldo has exacerbated Portugal's frustrating start to their European Championship title defence, however, things couldn't be going much better for free-scoring England and France.

Ronaldo hobbled off in the first half with a right hamstring injury in Portugal's 1-1 Group B draw with Serbia at the Stadium of Light, which came three days after their 0-0 home draw with Ukraine.

Team doctors said Ronaldo will undergo tests but the star forward said he expects to return to action sooner rather than later.

"I'm not worried, I know my body," Ronaldo told Portuguese media. "I should be back in one or two weeks."

Danilo Pereira scored a brilliant equaliser for Portugal on 42 minutes to cancel out Dusan Tadic's penalty in the seventh minute.

Also in Group B, Ukraine beat Luxembourg 2-1 thanks to an own-goal in the third minute of injury time, and moved into first place on four points.

While Portugal have made a slow start to qualifying, England and France are already well on their way to topping their groups.

England came from a goal down to hammer hosts Montenegro 5-1 and follow up their 5-0 thrashing of the Czech Republic in Group A.

Ross Barkley scored twice, while Michael Keane, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling also scored after Marko Vesovic's surprise opener.

"For the team to recover from going a goal behind in a place that's been very difficult for us before, showed some good character, it was a good test for them," manager Gareth Southgate after England's first win in Montenegro.

The match was marred by apparent racist chanting toward England's black players from Montenegro fans and manager Gareth Southgate said the English Football Association would be making a complaint to UEFA.

In the group's other game, Kosovo drew 1-1 with Bulgaria to mark their first EURO qualifier since becoming a member of UEFA in 2016.

After opening Group B with a 4-1 win over Moldova, France had a more impressive 4-0 win over Iceland with Samul Umtiti, Olivier Giroud, Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann scoring the goals.

Giroud's goal was his 35th in internationals, leaving him France's outright third highest-scoring player behind only Thierry Henry (51) and Michel Platini (41).

In other Group H matches, Turkey beat Moldova 4-0 and Albania won 3-0 at Andorra.

France lead the group on goal difference from Turkey.
