Indonesia footballer dies after horror tackle

An Indonesian footballer has been killed after a brutal tackle from an opposition goalkeeper.

Persiraja striker Akli Fairuz died six days after he was kicked in the stomach during a challenge from PSAP Sigli goalkeeper Agus Rahman during an Indonesian Premier League game on May 10, Indonesian media reports.

Fairuz was approaching the goal square when Rahman charged at him with his boots raised stud-first, collecting him in the lower torso.

Fairuz managed to get the ball past the keeper but the linesman called him offside.

The collision raised tensions on the field with a small scuffle breaking out on the sidelines.

Fairuz was substituted off the field in pain and watched the rest of the game from the sidelines, but was rushed to hospital after the match as his condition deteriorated.

Doctors discovered he had suffered internal injuries and operated on him but he died six days after surgery.

It is not known if Rahman will face any charges over the incident.
