Strong winds result in most unlikely of goals

There are wind-assisted goals and then there is this miracle.

Usually the preliminary rounds of the FA Cup go by with little or no fanfare. Park footballers get out there and chase their dreams. The dream scenario for them is to make the main draw, then win a few rounds and get lucky by drawing a Premier League club.

Thamesmead Town FC didn’t wait that long to get their 15 minutes of fame.

With a lot of help from a strong wind, Jack Mahoney and his teammates turned on  a goal that has to be seen to be believed.

The initial shot on goal (if you can call it that) would have sailed well over the bar on any other day. Not on this one.

The wind stopped the ball – and momentarily confused the cameraman – before hitting the bar and leaving Mahoney with a tap in.

Thamesmead Town and Guernsey finished 2-2 in what was the first FA Cup tie to be played on the Channel Island of Guernsey.
