Greek striker wants Socceroos switch

One of the Greek Super League's top strikers Apostolos Giannou could turn out for the Socceroos in their World Cup qualifiers against Tajikistan and Jordan in March.

Born in Greece but raised in Melbourne, Giannou played for Greece in a 0-0 draw against Turkey in November 2015.

However, he recently spoke to Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou about changing his allegiance to Australia ahead of the 2016 World Cup.

As his one Greek cap was in a friendly, Giannou is eligible to make the switch and pull on the Socceroos shirt.

Giannou played under Postecoglou in 2006 with the Australian under-17s, before representing Greece at under-19 and under-21 level.

The Socceroos coach has since travelled to Greece to visit the 26-year-old, who is the second top-scorer in the Greek Super League, prompting Giannou to consider a return to the Australian colours.

"The thing about Ange, which I appreciate, is he didn't push me to play for Australia," Giannou told Fox Sports News.

"He wanted to see how my mind was and how I thought about it.

"Australia would be better for me as a footballer, to play for them and to give them everything I can and to bring the best out of me."

He scored 13 goals in 21 games for Asteras Tripolo this season, before transferring to Chinese club Guangzhou R&F on Wednesday.
