Goal confusion ends French rout

There was confusion at the end of France's 5-2 World Cup flogging of Switzerland, with the French denied a sixth goal right on fulltime.

Striker Karim Benzema thought he had scored, but was denied when Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers blew the final whistle in the middle of the French attack.

Kuipers refused to recognise the goal, which would have made the score 6-2 for France.

It would have been Benzema's second goal for the game and had it been allowed, would have put him alone on top of the tournament goal-scoring table with four goals.

It was the second misfortune for the Real Madrid striker in Brazil.

In France's opening game against Honduras, a goal he thought should gave been his was ruled an own goal by the goalkeeper on the basis of the new goalline technology.
