Glory's Popovic embraces perceived issues

Perth Glory coach Tony Popovic is embracing the heightened expectations surrounding his team - even though it means the club might cop some unfair criticism.

Glory have enjoyed a remarkable start under Popovic's tenure, losing once in the first 15 rounds to sit two points clear on top of the A-League table.

However, their recent 0-0 draws against Melbourne City (away) and Adelaide United (home) have drawn criticism.

In previous seasons, an away point against Melbourne City and a gritty draw against Adelaide would have been viewed as a success.

But with the star-studded squad now among the title favourites, Popovic is well aware the external expectations on each performance have risen.

"That's what we've always asked for and that's what we've created," Popovic said.

"It's good to see Perth Glory's seen in a different light now.

"You have a 0-0 draw away at Melbourne and it's (viewed as) an issue..

"You have a 0-0 at home in this period against Adelaide where it's a tough game and we did well, and it becomes a little bit of an issue to some people.

"And that's great, that's fine. I never view that as pressure. We want to be that club that is challenging for honours.

"That's a lot better than being a club that's fighting at the wrong end at the table and being delighted with the odd win here or there."

Popovic has made 19 changes to his starting line-up over the past four games in a bid to keep his players fresh during the busy January period.

More changes are set to be made for Sunday's clash with Newcastle in Perth, with Diego Castro, Andy Keogh, and Matthew Spiranovic among the candidates to be handed starting roles.
