Germany give youth a chance

Injured Germany midfielder Karim Bellarabi will miss Sunday's Euro 2016 warm-up match against Slovakia along with other established names, with youth given a chance to impress, coach Joachim Loew said.

The world champions travel from their Swiss base to Augsburg for the friendly, where uncapped trio Julian Weigl, Joshua Kimmich and Julian Brandt will make their debuts.

Loew also said forward Leroy Sane, who has one cap, will feature as the young guns push for a Euro squad place. It had already been announced that reserve goalkeeper Bernd Leno would make his debut from the start.

"My first impressions are very good, the atmosphere is good but also very focused," Loew told a press conference on Saturday.

Captain Bastian Schweinsteiger, defender Mats Hummels and forward Marco Reus are still working on their fitness after injury while Thomas Mueller, Mesut Ozil and Manuel Neuer will also stay behind in Switzerland as they recover from long seasons.

Lukas Podolski will meet up with the team in Augsburg having been on Galatasaray duty while Toni Kroos plays for Real Madrid in Saturday's Champions League final.

Leverkusen winger Bellarabi suffered a slight sprain in a midweek kickabout with the under-20s, which the senior team won 7-0.

"We assume that he will start running again tomorrow or the day after," Loew said.

All are expected to make the final 23-man squad if fit but the younger names face a battle to make the plane to France with Loew initially picking a 27-man training squad.

The deadline for the final squad is Tuesday although changes can be made later in case of injury.

Germany's final warm-up is against Hungary on June 4 and they kick off their Euro campaign against Ukraine on June 12 in Lille.
