Borussia Dortmund players have risked their personal safety after trying to plead with fans angered by another home loss for the former German champions.

Captain and goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller and defender Mats Hummels approached the riled up crowd after the club’s recent 1-0 loss to Augsburg.

Incensed by the club’s woeful form – Dortmund haven’t tasted a win in the Bundesliga since late last year and currently are rooted to the bottom of the table – the fans vented their frustrations at two of the club’s most decorated players.

In the footage, Weidenfeller tries to calm one fan before scaling the high perimeter fence to grab the attention of a wider section of the stands.

Meanwhile, Hummels, who is also captured trying to placate the irate supporters, believes the fan have every right to be annoyed with their heroes.

"If one is in this position after 19 games then it would be unacceptable not to have understanding for the fans' reactions," Hummels told Omnisport.
