It's the sort of wound that makes even the hardest sports fan wince.

English footballer Karleigh Osborne had to be stretchered from the field after suffering a horror leg injury during a pre-season friendly in Botswana on Sunday.

The Bristol City defender was left with two deep gouges in his shin following a challenge during a clash with Botswana Premier League side Extension Gunners.

The 26-year-old had only just come onto the pitch as an 81st minute substitute when he came off second best during a challenge and had to be stretchered from the field in visible pain.

The injury was the only sour note for the League One side, who won the match 3-0 and are the first British side to play in Africa.

City boss Steve Cotterill said while the wound was ugly he was thankful the injury was not career-ending.

"If his foot would have been planted he might not have played football again," Cotterill said.

"But look at the end of the day you've got to be men in football.

"I think my boys tonight were tremendous in regards to that."
