Paraguay football hero Derlis Gonzalez is mourning after his uncle suffered a fatal heart attack while celebrating the star’s winning penalty in their Copa America quarter-final win over Brazil.

Gonzalez scored a crucial spot kick goal to level the game and then hit home the winning goal during the penalty shootout to complete a stunning upset.

However, it has been revealed his uncle Irrazabul Manuel suffered a fatal heart attack while celebrating the winning penalty.

Golzalez's father, Simon Pablo, told Paraguayan media Manuel, 44, was watching the match at a friend's house when he went into cardiac arrest and later died.

Gonzalez has since posted on Twitter his despair over his uncle's death.

"Why today uncle?" he tweeted. "Why? You left me after a heart attack because I gave you so much joy and so much happiness. I can’t believe it."

The heartbreak has soured what should have been the star's greatest international football moment.

However, he is expected to play in Paraguay's semi-final clash with Argentina this week.
