Football fans shake stadium to its foundations

Reporters are prone to describe the atmosphere at a major sports event as "rocking".

But in a somewhat chilling moment supporters at a recent German football match actually had the grandstands shaking to the foundations.

Jumping up and down in unison during a relegation playoff match between Eintracth Frankfurt and Nurenberg, it looked like Frankenstadion was about to collapse under the weight of thousands of raucous supporters.

Mesmerising footage shows the roof and grandstand floor reverberating like an earthquake epicentre.

It makes for disconcerting viewing considering the history of football stadium collapses.

Fortunately, the sturdy stadium showed no signs of cracking under the heaving mass with the foundations no doubt built to allow some give and take.

But both sets of supporters finished the match with frayed nerves after a nail-biting 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Bundesliga battle.
