Football Federation Australia have finally appointed a technical director after a nine-month wait.

Melbourne Victory's coaching general manager Rob Sherman will take up the key position after finishing up at the A-League club at the end of next month.

Sherman, a former professional footballer, has held similar roles in Wales and New Zealand.

He was previously employed by FFA as head of coach education.

FFA chief David Gallop said the appointment took so long as "it was important we found the right person with extensive knowledge of the Australian football landscape and an ability to unite the football community through a clear vision".

"We believe Rob is the perfect fit in that regard," he said.

Sherman will oversee a gargantuan task stitching together Australian football's curriculum, national teams, youth pathways, competitions, coach development and participation.

He said he would begin with a review to "ensure we adopt world best practice for elite youth development including resourcing and the requirements for elite national teams".

"We know we have a big job ahead to bring all parts of the ecosystem together," he said.
