SNAPSHOT FROM DAY 32 OF THE WORLD CUP

AT A GLANCE: France went into the World Cup final as favourites and lived up their billing with a 4-2 victory over Croatia at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. An own goal from Mario Mandzukic, an Antoine Griezmann penalty and second-half goals from Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba saw Les Blues home while Ivan Perisic and Mandzukic replied for the gallant Croatians.

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Kylian Mbappe just edged teammate Antoine Griezmann with the France teenager's pace and skill causing Croatia's defence all sorts of problems, culminating in his team's fourth goal of the game and his fourth of the tournament.

TALKING POINT: Russia are seen as winners on and off the pitch - overturning negative cliches in the build-up by being warm hosts for the hundreds of thousands of fans from abroad at a tournament which saw many favourites falter and others surprise. Can Qatar do the same in four years' time?

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "Talent is not sufficient. You need the psychological and mental aspects. Any team is then able to climb mountains," France coach Didier Deschamps said after Les Bleus' win over Croatia made him just the third man to win the World Cup as a player and coach.

STAT OF THE DAY: 169 - Number of goals in the 64 games at the World Cup, just two shy of the record set at the 1998 edition and matched in 2014.
