Penalty drama explained as Paris Saint-Germain advance to Champions League final against Arsenal

Paris Saint-Germain will play Arsenal in the Champions League final on May 31 (AEST) after Ousmane Dembele fired the defending champions to a 6-5 aggregate win over Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.

Thursday's (AEST) tense 1-1 draw at Allianz Arena followed PSG's extraordinary 5-4 win in the first leg at Parc des Princes last week.

Bayern had entered the tie as favourites but Luis Enrique's men again showed they had defensive steel to go with the sublime attack that led to Dembele's crucial early goal.

Precision one-touch football from deep in their own half opened up space for Georgian wizard Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to maraud down the left flank and cross for the Ballon d'Or winner to score in the third minute and leave Bayern chasing the game.

There was controversy in the first half when referee Joao Pinheiro waved away Bayern's penalty claims.

PSG midfielder Vitinha blasted an attempted clearance into teammate Joao Neves' arm inside the box but BBC rules expert Dale Johnson said Pinheiro had made the right call.

"When the ball is unexpectedly hit at you by a teammate, even if your arm is away from your body - the law says you should not give away a penalty," Johnson said.

"When Vitinha blasts the ball clear, could Joao Neves think the ball would be hit straight at him?

"Of course, this could be overridden by deliberate handball, but in the context of this situation, a penalty would not be expected to be awarded."

Johnson's explanation didn't stop Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen from having a whinge post-match.

"It is, at the very least, astonishing that a referee with only 15 Champions League appearances is allowed to lead such a game," Dreesen said.

"And that may also explain one or two decisions."

Bayern superstar Harry Kane scored a terrific equaliser deep into added time but it proved too little too late for the hosts.

"It's magnificent, two finals," PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said.

"Now we will go there and try to fetch a second star. I said to the players we are warriors."

PSG's defence - breached four times in Paris last week - kept Bayern's much vaunted attack of Kane, Luis Diaz and Micheal Olise largely in check.

"We know how to suffer and we're ready for what we have to face. We're very proud of how far we've come," Neves said.

By the time Kane let fly for his 55th goal across all competitions including the German Supercup for Bayern this season, PSG's substitutes were already lining up to celebrate.

Real Madrid was the last team to achieve back-to-back titles.

Arsenal advanced to the decider in Budapest by beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 on aggregate in their semi-final.

The Gunners have never won the Champions League.

The final will feature a fascinating managerial matchup between Spaniards Luis Enrique and Mikel Arteta.

The pair were clubmates at Barcelona between 1997-2002 before Arteta moved onto Rangers.

"I appreciate Mikelito Arteta," Enrique said.

"We used to be teammates when we were kids, he did a great job at Arsenal. It will be a difficult, hard game but we believe in our football style.

"It's incredible. We have to make the most of this night, but we have to think about the final."

PSG beat Arsenal 3-1 on aggregate in last year's Champions League semis.
