Bayern stay four points clear in Germany

Bayern Munich have stayed four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga after playing out a 0-0 draw against Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The defending champions had goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to thank on Sunday for not suffering a first league defeat of the season against Gladbach, who matched the defending champions throughout and will consider themselves unfortunate not to have secured all three points.

The draw sees Bayern move on to 21 points, four clear of Gladbach, who also remain unbeaten.

Wolfsburg also have 17 points and sit in third ahead of Hoffenheim on goal difference thanks to a 3-0 defeat of Mainz 05 in the day's earlier game.

In an entertaining encounter at the Borussia Park stadium, Bayern almost went ahead after 10 minutes but David Alaba's goalbound shot was tipped on to the post by Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

The home side's best chance of the half came from a breakaway on 34 minutes when Andre Hahn's ball found Max Kruse in the area but the striker's weak effort was easily saved by Neuer.

Gladbach also enjoyed a stroke of luck four minutes before the break when Robert Lewandowski's shot took a wicked deflection off Alvaro Dominguez but trickled just wide with Sommer stranded.

Neuer pulled off a superb one-handed save to deny Hahn on 55 minutes as Gladbach again threatened on the break and the Germany goalkeeper had to be at his best once more 12 minutes later when parrying away a Raffael free-kick that evaded everyone in the area.

Raffael was again denied by Neuer on 78 minutes while Bayern almost snatched victory themselves in a frantic final 10 minutes but first Juan Bernat's shot went just wide and then substitute Claudio Pizarro's effort was blocked by Sommer.

VfL Wolfsburg moved level on points with Gladbach thanks to a comfortable victory over Mainz.

Naldo headed home the opening goal of the game after 15 minutes and the Brazilian defender also set up Wolfsburg's second for Ivan Perisic just before the hour mark to make it 2-0 to the home side.

Daniel Caligiuri completed the scoring three minutes from time.

"Today it was clear to see that we are in top form," said Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking. "Once we got going the potential this team has was obvious to see."

Mainz drop to sixth on 14 points following their first league loss of the season, two points adrift of Bayer Leverkusen, 1-0 victors over Schalke on Saturday.
