Bayern Munich's Kingsley Coman has scored an extra-time winner in a nervous 3-2 victory at Hertha Berlin and a spot in the German Cup soccer quarter-finals.

The French winger, surrounded by three Hertha players, headed in from close range in the 98th minute, handing victory to Bayern who had dominated Wednesday's encounter but somehow failed to win in normal time.

Hertha took a third-minute lead with their first effort on goal through Maximilian Mittelstadt but it was all Bayern after that as the visitors bossed the ball with 75 per cent possession.

Serge Gnabry fired in the equaliser four minutes later and scored again four minutes after the break to put Bayern ahead.

A blunder by defender Mats Hummels, who headed the ball into the path of substitute Davie Selke, allowed Hertha to equalise with only their second shot on goal.

Coman came to the rescue in the first period of extra time to save Bayern.

The Bavarians, who lost 3-1 to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday to drop to third in the Bundesliga, play Liverpool later this month in the Champions League round of 16.

Dortmund were knocked out of the German Cup on Tuesday, losing on penalties to Werder Bremen.
