Bayern Munich lift ban on Sun

Bayern Munich are to admit the Sun newspaper to Wednesday's Champions League match against Manchester United after the British tabloid apologised for what the German club said was an "insulting" headline.

The club's media director, Markus Hoerwick, said Saturday the Sun would be accredited for the quarter-final second-leg game at Munich's Allianz Arena.

The Sun, under the headline "Sorry, Bastian," said in its online edition it had not intended to cause offence in a report referring to the sending off of Bayern midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger in the first-leg match which finished 1-1.

"We would like to apologise for any offence the online headline 'You Schwein' may have caused Bastian Schweinsteiger after the Manchester United-Bayern Munich match last Tuesday," the Sun wrote.

"It was not our intention to embarrass Bastian or Bayern Munich.

"It was removed after one hour and never appeared in any editions of The Sun."

Bayern had said Thursday it would not approve accreditations for representatives of the Sun and Daily Mirror for the Champions League match following "disrespectful" and "insulting" headlines.

The Daily Mirror carried a similar headline, "You Dirty Schwein".

"Schwein" translates as pig or swine.
