Australian becomes Arsenal Women manager

Melbourne City's back-to-back W-League championship coach, Joseph Montemurro, has been named Arsenal Women's new manager.

The 48-year-old is currently also assistant coach of Melbourne City's A-League side but the club says his shift to the English team is effective immediately.

Montemurro coached Melbourne Victory in the W-League in 2014/15, when they finished runners-up before moving over to City and helping them to a championship-premiership double in 2015/16.

Under his tutelage they become the first club in the competition to claim consecutive titles in 2016/17 and the assistant's position with City's A-League side followed.

The Melbourne-born coach has thanked Melbourne City for the opportunities.

"The club has always been supportive and allowed me to develop and grow both professionally and personally," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Montemurro replaces Pedro Martinez Losa at the FA Women's Super League club.
