Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski summed up his team’s Champions League performance when he was forced to borrow a teammate's shin pad before being brought on against Borussia Dortmund.

The English Premier League club began their latest quest for European glory on the worst possible foot after being out-gunned by the German club 2-0.

With his teammates losing the battle, substitute Podolski was called upon by Gunners’ boss Arsene Wenger to turn the tide against the marauding Dortmund.

But as the German international began to warm up for his introduction, he quickly realised he was missing one shin pad.

Footage from the match picks up the 29-year-old scanning the away team’s dugout, looking behind chairs and even asking his teammates for help in the search, hoping they had mistakenly sat on the protective leg gear.

But Podolski eventually succumbed to his personal ordeal, forced to borrow teammate and compatriot Mesut Ozil’s shin pad before joining the fray in the 77th minute.

But his arrival did little to help Arsenal’s cause, Podolski butchering a late golden chance to score when he miscontrolled the ball in front of an open net.
