Ange unfazed over missing Socceroos stars

He's lost two of his biggest stars for one of Australia's most-crucial World Cup qualifiers, but Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou isn't losing any sleep.

Key striker Mathew Leckie has officially been ruled out of Thursday's crunch clash with Kyrgyzstan at Canberra's GIO Stadium, the German-based 24-year-old given medical advice not to fly from Europe due to a respiratory problem.

Leckie, who will also not take part in Tuesday's fixture with Bangladesh, has been a vital cog in Postecoglou's squad on the road to Russia, having been his preferred starter in all four qualifiers so far.

"Leck has picked up some sort of bug or infection which meant he was unable to fly," Postecoglou confirmed on Wednesday.

"We had a deadline of yesterday (Tuesday) and he still wasn't able to get on a plane, so he's ruled out."

The latest hit to Australia's stocks follows this week's earlier blow of central defensive backbone Matthew Spiranovic being excluded with a calf complaint.

The loss of the experienced duo is seemingly grave news for a Socceroos side lacking any more safety nets in the first qualifying phase and about to face 124th-ranked Kyrgyzstan, the team that came so close to shocking the Asian champions in their June opener.

However, Postecoglou has kept his faith in the depth of his squad, all of whom he says are fit and available and itching to rebound from last month's shock 2-0 defeat to group leaders Jordan.

"The work we've done in the last two years means that I'm not nearly as stressed about people dropping out as I was previously," Postecoglou said on Wednesday.

"The guys who are here have all presented themselves in good condition and good form.

"Apart from Josh Risdon and James Meredith (and goalkeeper Alex Cisak), all of them have had good experience in international football, so I'm a lot more comfortable.

"And to be honest, our last performance wasn't great - I would have made changes anyway.

"I'm certainly not losing any sleep about the guys who aren't here."

Postecoglou said first-choice custodian Mat Ryan was in contention, despite the Valencia gloveman having not played a match in more than two months as he recovered from knee surgery and subsequent complications.

Ryan completed his first full training session with the national team on Tuesday, giving the coach something to think about given back-up keeper Adam Federici had not put a foot wrong in the past three games.

The Socceroos will get a boost from the presence of returning skipper Mile Jedinak and his shiny midfield cohort of local Canberra boy Tom Rogic, Massimo Luongo, Aaron Mooy and Mark Milligan.

Kyrgyzstan - one point behind second-placed Australia, but having had one match more - have a lot to play for but are facing selection issues of their own.

It's basically the final chance keep their World Cup dream pumping, meaning a slippery test for the Socceroos.

But while Kyrgyzstan troubled Australia on the counter-attack last time, their main threat in this area, winger Anton Zemlianukhin, is out injured.

The country's all-time leading goalscorer Mirlan Murzaev is also absent, as is burly defender Daniel Tagoe.

While Postecoglou reiterated he would never alter a team's style based on one bad result, he made it clear to his players they were too conservative in the way they approached Jordan.

"The disappointing part of the last game was our attacking intent. It wasn't as aggressive as it should have been," he said.

"If you're not on your game all the time, you'll get punished. That's what happened to us."
