Spanish La Liga side Villarreal have signed striker Paco Alcacer from Germany's Borussia Dortmund for a reported fee of 25 million euros ($A41 million).

Former Valencia and Barcelona forward Alcacer lost his starting place in the line-up at the Bundesliga club, who in the winter break signed 19-year-old Norway striker Erling Braut Haaland from RB Salzburg.

Alcacer has signed with Villarreal until June 2025.

The Spain international, who scored 26 goals in 47 games for Dortmund, will be presented to the fans on Friday

His replacement Haaland twice came off the substitutes' bench in Dortmund's first two games of the new year, at Augsburg and at home to Cologne, to score five goals.

Alcacer, who was signed for around 23 million euros from Barcelona in February 2019 after initially arriving on loan in August 2018, was not chosen in the squad against Augsburg, and was on the bench for 90 minutes against Cologne.

"It has not been an easy decision but if the economic parameters are right, we will agree to a transfer," Dortmund sports director Michael Zorc had said.

The striker's sale could free up finance for Dortmund to enter the transfer market again before the close of Friday's deadline day.

Zorc confirmed that Dortmund are interested in Juventus and Germany midfielder Emre Can "but no decision has been reached."
