Former Socceroo and Fox Sports football analyst Robbie Slater has been front and centre of a social media backlash over ABC2's coverage of the friendly between Sydney FC and Liverpool FC at ANZ Stadium, claiming it was "embarrassing" and "unforgiveable."

While the English Premier League giants proved too strong for the A-League champions with a 3-0 win and the commentary from former Socceroos captain Paul Wade and Ned Hall wasn't an issue, it was the pre-match, half-time and post-match shows that left viewers seething.

Fronted by comedian Jules Schiller, and comics Tegan Higginbotham and Steen Raskopoulos, the trio came up with a series of flat gags including using whiteboards for each team's line up, tweeting Socceroos legend Harry Kewell, and trying to call Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold during the game.

"I am embarrassed by the coverage of #LIVSYD tonight! After all the hard work put into the game in this country!" Slater tweeted.

"I am so angry that they would do this to the game ! Whoever at FFA made this decision in my opinion should hang their head in shame."

Slater found plenty of willing allies with the Newcastle Jets media manager Ben O'Neill also tweeting his dismay at what he was watching.

Arguably the real highlight (or lowlight depending on how you view it) came when they crossed to sideline reporter Aaron Chen who gave an interview that was so embarrassingly bad, it actually became kind of funny for the two minutes he was on air.

"Oh my gosh, it is going so crazy, these are some of the wildest dudes I've evert met," Chen exclaims to modest scenes of excitement behind him.

He goes on to ask one Sydney FC fan, "What's your favourite possession?"

The fan quips back, "Possession or position?"

Chen quickly turns to another fan and asks, "Who would win in a game of UFC,  Liverpool FC or Sydney FC?" before cutting off his answer.

Chen then rips his Sydney FC shirt off to show an American football t-shirt underneath before yelling, "Oh no. We did it again. I ruined everybody's life.

"They wanted me to keep the Sydney FC shirt on but it's about football today. You can't stop me. I love football. Football is one of the best sports."

Chiller finally cut Chen off and it would be fair to say that Slater and most of the viewers thought that came about two minutes too late.
