Sydney FC striker Patrick Wood will be counting his lucky stars that his missed "astonishing" missed chance against the Mariners didn't come back to bite him.

In the first-half of Saturday night's A-League clash at Central Coast Stadium, with the visitors already leading 3-0, Wood had the opportunity to put the result even further out of reach with a simple task at hand.

After opposing keeper Danny Vukovic came up with a howler a couple of metres out from his own goal, Wood pounced and went to tap the ball into the back of the net.

Unfortunately, despite the close proximity, the 21-year-old sprayed it wide of the near-post to the disbelief of everyone inside the ground.

"Anything can and does happen, because you will never see that again," the commentator said during the Paramount coverage.

"That is the most astonishing miss.

"Poor old Pat Wood, he must be wishing the ground would just swallow him up."

The other commentator ever bought into the online perception of the competition, describing the error as "peak A-League" to rub further salt into the wounds.

Thankfully for Wood and his teammates, the error didn't prove costly, with Sydney able to collect all three points with a 3-1 triumph on the road, with the hosts scoring a consolation goal in the 56th minute.

Rhyan Grant scored in the 4th minute and Anthony Caceres extended the lead in the 8th minute, before an own-goal from Mariners player Dan Hall made matters worse.
