Horror goals decide A-League showdown

Powered by

Newcastle Jets keeper Jack Duncan would have been the most relieved man in the Hunter on Friday night after his shocker was bailed out by team-mates.

Duncan had a direct role in one of the two goals that decided the Newcastle- Adelaide United A-League match that was decided by a pair of least impressive goals you’re likely to see.

It all started when Duncan turned in a contender for the blunder of the season when he punched the ball into his own net to get Adelaide back on level terms.

What should have been a regulation save from an Isaias free-kick ended with a red-faced Duncan wondering what had gone wrong.

Adelaide’s late search for a winner then played a major role in handing Newcastle the winner.

With a draw meaning little in their bid to move up the ladder the Reds threw men forward and, as teams often do, paid the price.

After narrowly avoiding conceding a goal twice in the preceding two minutes, the Reds’ did just that.

Their defenders were hoping the off-side flag would go up, but when it didn’t their goose was cooked when Morten Nordstrand scoring an injury-time winner.

Don't expect to see this match popping up in the future as a A-League classic.
