Fan's pic with Richie McCaw goes viral

He might’ve hung up the boots but All Blacks great Richie McCaw still has star power – and it’s rubbing off after one of his adoring fans became a viral star across the ditch.

The former New Zealand captain was at a service station in New Zealand filling up his car when he was spotted by a rugby fan who couldn’t hide his excitement.

Bronson Kapita was star struck when he stumbled across the two-time World Cup winner at the Nelson petrol station.

As McCaw goes into pay for his fuel, Katipa starts recording on his smartphone, saying what sounds like "it's Richie McCoy".

McCaw didn’t look to keen to exchange pleasantries but still handled the situation with class, posing for the video with Katipa and his friend.

The rugby fan said he almost didn’t muster the courage to approach his hero at the cash register.

"I wanted to be as inconspicuous as possible so I asked him if it was all good, and he was totally good with it."

Katipa posted the video on Facebook where it's been viewed more than 38,000 times.

As for the pronunciation of McCaw’s name Katipa is adament he said "McCaw" and not "McCoy".
