DC Comics going batty over Valencia logo

DC Comic are taking one of Europe’s top football clubs to court over trademark issues relating to the famous Batman logo.

Spanish newspaper Plaza Deportiva have reported that DC Comics filed a complaint with the OHIC, the European Union’s trademark registration organisation, over Spanish club Valencia’s new badge design.

The comic book company claim the club’s new design, which shows the bat’s wings upwardly outstretched, is too similar to the caped crusader’s call sign.

The figure of a bat has been a prominent part of the Valencia, a former La Liga and UEFA Cup winner, logo since 1919 and the club’s primary logo shows a bat with its wings pointing down and around the team’s colours.

Batman, however, wasn’t created by Bob Kane until 1939, nearly two decades after the first time the bat appeared on the Valencia logo.
