'I'm going to have to find a new one': Aussie cult hero barred from using explicit nickname at darts World Championships

Australian darts player Tim Pusey has been barred from using his nickname at the World Championships.

Known as "The Magnet", the nickname has been banned given the sexual connotations when combined with his surname.

The 33-year-old will attend his first World Championships in London across December and January.

Speaking on the Tungsten Tales podcast, Pusey said he might offer up a poll to fans to come up with a new nickname.

"That's why I don't have any of that on my shirt," he said.

"I'm going to have to find a new one. We might have to do some sort of poll.

"It's hard, because everything can be turned.

"At the moment I don't have any (alternatives) and the chants can be colourful."

The banning of the nickname has made international news.

The London crowd is known for its raucousness and will likely give the nickname a strong run regardless.

It's not the first time the championship has turned its nose up at a nickname, despite the fact that darts is famous for its lively and boisterous atmosphere.

In 2023, English darts player Owen "The Master" Bates was told he couldn't use the branding at that year's tournament.

Pusey qualified for the World Championships by finishing first in the Australian Darts Association Tour rankings.

He will pocket $30,000 just for qualifying and could make $2m if he wins the whole thing, with the prize pool doubling from last year.

Last year's championship was won by England's Luke Littler, who took home the $1m prize before turning 18.
