Two cyclists set to make Rio Games appeals

Two Australian cyclists will make last-ditch appeals this week for Olympic selection.

The appeals have delayed the announcements of the women's road and men's mountain bike teams for Rio.

Cycling Australia will not name the cyclists involved in the appeals.

The cycling team for the Olympics will eventually feature four women road riders and two men's mountain bikers.

National time-trial champion Kat Garfoot is a strong medal contender in the event and is a certain women's road selection.

Likewise, it is highly unlikely that London Olympian Daniel McConnell's position is in doubt for mountain bike.

Other women vying for the three remaining road berths include Gracie Elvin, Rachel Neylan, Amanda Spratt and Tiffany Cromwell.

An independent panel will hear the appeals on Wednesday, with no timeframe set for the verdicts.

Who makes the men's mountain bike team could have a direct impact on the men's road team at the Games.

At this stage, selectors have effectively switched one of the four men's road berths to bolster the depth of the men's track endurance squad.

Richie Porte, Simon Gerrans and Rohan Dennis are the three confirmed road selections.

But selectors could use one of the track endurance riders or a mountain biker to bring the men's road race team up to the maximum four starters.
