The fairytale finish for Cadel Evans may be over, but the start of a new Australian hero may begin on the streets of Adelaide.

Rohan Dennis, the BMC teammate of Evans, has a two-second lead over compatriot Richie Porte after winning stage three and finishing second in the climb to Willunga Hill.

But Porte, who beat Dennis in Saturday’s stage five, will leave nothing in the tank as he looks to claim his first Tour.

However, Dennis said he’s in the prime position to claim the first WorldTour event of the year.

"It's going to be a defensive game," Dennis said.

"I do sprint better than Richie, so I'm very confident.

"We just have to stay at the front, stay out of trouble and really just follow him.

"If he sprints and I sprint, there's no reason I won't beat him."
