British triathlete and Olympic hopeful Ross Fawcett has crashed his bike on a busy English street while trying to complete a NekNominate challenge.

Fawcett's attempt to drink a beer while cycling ended in disaster as he took both hands from the handle bars and lost control, careening over his front wheel to land heavily on the bitumen.

The Great Britain representative lost a lot of blood from a cut on his hand, which required seven stitches in hospital.

His brother told England's The Mirror that the stunt was an attempt to outdo his mates.

"It could have been a lot worse considering how fast he was going. We all knew he had been nominated but we didn't know how it was going to do it.

"I think he just decided after he had gone out training. None of us had much sympathy for him but luckily he wasn't too badly hurt.

"It is a busy road but fortunately there wasn't a car behind them at the time. His bike was covered in blood and was just scratched.

"Ross has been out training since so he's OK now."
