Glaetzer wins R1 in Rio cycling

Australian star Matthew Glaetzer has won his round-one sprint heat in Olympic track cycling.

Glaetzer beat Colombian Fabian Puerta in the opening round of match sprinting after qualifying third-fastest.

The Australian rode 9.704 in qualifying for the flying 200m.

Ominously, the two riders ahead of him are British.

Reigning world champion and defending Olympic champion Jason Kenny broke his own Games record with 9.551.

Teammate Callum Skinner was next with 9.703.

Kenny and Skinner were members of the team sprint combination that upset New Zealand on Thursday to win the gold medal.

The two British riders also won through to the next round.

Skinner beat Australian Patrick Constable, who qualified 17th-fastest.

Constable then won his first-round repechage round heat to stay in the competition.

The men's sprint draw will continue on Saturday through to the semi-finals, with the medals to be decided on Sunday.
