Gerrans steals TDU lead from Evans

Simon Gerrans has reclaimed the overall lead of the Tour Down Under, stealing the ochre jersey from Cadel Evans after a thrilling finish to Stage 5 of the race.

Team Sky rider Richie Porte won the 151.5km stage from McLaren Vale to Willunga Hill, but all eyes were on Gerrans and Evans who finished third and sixth respectively.

Porte finished with a time of 3:42:20, with Gerrans 10 seconds behind and Evans 5 seconds further back.

With four bonus seconds awarded throughout the stage, Gerrans snatched the ochre jersey from Evans and now holds a slim one second lead heading into the final stage around Adelaide on Sunday.

"I've just managed to sneak back into the lead for the GC so it's been a great day," Gerrans said after the race.

Stage two winner Diego Ulissi is third overall, five seconds behind Gerrans, while Porte will start the day tomorrow 10 seconds behind.
