Khawaja falls just short of 100 again

Australian batsman Usman Khawaja has finished a heartbreaking three runs short from a century for the second time this summer after being caught behind in the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan.

Khawaja resumed play on Thursday morning on 95 not out and only added two more runs to his tally before playing at a ball from Wahab Riaz that swung away from him outside off stump.

The Pakistan-born batsman looked to punch it through the covers with a big drive but succeeded in only getting a thick edge to be caught behind by wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed.

Khawaja kept his head down as he trudged off the field disappointed at falling short again after he was dismissed for 97 in the First Test against South Africa at the WACA.

The left-handed batsman has been in good touch this summer after also posting scores of 64, 145 and 74.

His departure left Australia at 3-282 still chasing Pakistan’s first innings total of 9(dec)-443 with Peter Handscomb joining captain Steve Smith at the crease.
