English legend quits national coaching role to focus on Aussie job
Andrew Flintoff has walked away from his job as England Lions coach with immediate effect, a week after under fire national cricket director Rob Key described him as an “unsung hero” of English cricket.
Flintoff said “unfortunately” he was stepping down from the role overseeing the development of England’s next generation of players, but did not give a reason for his decision.

The 48-year-old, an all-rounder remembered for his exploits in the 2005 Ashes, now has no official involvement in English cricket. He is, however, head coach of Sydney Thunder, the Big Bash League franchise in Australia. His first season begins in December.
The Thunder called the signing the “most significant” in the club’s history, with ‘Freddie’ to take charge of the likes of David Warner, Sam Billings, Sam Konstas and more.
Flintoff had already agreed to become Thunder head coach, which would have meant he missed a portion of the Lions tour of South Africa. When Key was asked about this last Friday, he launched a robust defence of Flintoff, after an article in The Sunday Times called his appointment a “serious error”.
“I saw something I thought was unfair, actually, on Andrew Flintoff, where it said he shouldn’t have been doing that Lions job because he’s not doing this job now, the England head coach’s job,” Key said.
“I think that’s done a complete disservice to one of our greatest cricketers who, for the last three [sic] years, has done that Lions job when he could have done a hell of a lot of other things, earning a lot more money. But his passion [is] to actually try and bring the next generation through, and people like Sonny Baker, Mitch Stanley… so many of these players have come under his wing.
“We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have him do it. I thought it was disrespectful for people to say that he shouldn’t have been doing it. He’s been outstanding in that job, and we’ve been incredibly fortunate to have him.”
A week on, Flintoff has left the job, thanking Key for trusting him “with one of the most important roles in English cricket” and adding he “can’t wait to get started with Thunder”. Mike Yardy, coach of England U19s, will step in for a game against the touring Pakistanis at Beckenham next week.
“Unfortunately I’ve made the decision to step away from my role with the Lions,” Flintoff said.
“Not only have I enjoyed my time having the opportunity to work with the best young cricketers in the country, but have taken great pride in seeing them develop.”
Flintoff returned to professional involvement in cricket with the England set-up in 2023, nine months after he suffered a horrific crash while filming the BBC show Top Gear in December 2022.
Flintoff worked with England’s white-ball teams, including at the T20 World Cup in the US and Caribbean in 2024, and later that year took over as Lions head coach. For two seasons, until last summer, he combined that work with being head coach of Northern Superchargers, now Sunrisers Leeds, in the Hundred.
Key, a long-time friend of Flintoff and England’s managing director, has tipped him as a future England head coach, although he was not considered for the role when Brendon McCullum was sacked as Test coach recently, with the job going to another New Zealander, Stephen Fleming.
He has also been involved in cricket through his inspirational TV show, Field of Dreams. Two of his sons, 20-year-old Corey (Kent) and 18-year-old Rocky (Lancashire), are on the staff at first-class counties. Rocky has been involved with England U19s and Lions too.
Flintoff has forged a flourishing career in TV after his celebrated playing career ended, but after his crash his relationships with Key and Richard Thompson, the chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, meant he returned to the game. Thompson is founder and chairman of M&C Saatchi Merlin, the talent management agency that works with Flintoff.
Flintoff earned a reputation as a hard taskmaster with the Lions, focusing on fitness on last winter’s tour of Australia, and was credited by Key with being an inspirational figure for young players.
Ed Barney, England’s performance director, said: “Fred has helped to transform the Lions environment into a programme that has had a major impact on young players. By creating an environment that both supports and pushes excellence at all times he has helped bring forward a new generation of young players.”
In an Instagram post, Flintoff joked: “Good luck to whoever takes over, you have some big pants to fill”, followed by three laughing emojis.
