Jake Fraser-McGurk has been axed from Australia's squad ahead of the upcoming T20 series against the West Indies.

The young gun, who was seen as the replacement for David Warner in the national side, had a lean run of form earlier this year and has been overlooked for the 16-man squad.

The 23-year-old was also left out of the one-day side for the Champions Trophy earlier in the year as his rocky ride continues.

Marcus Stoinis and Xavier Barlett have also been dropped for the five-game series, which will kick-start the run into next year's T20 World Cup.

In their place, Mitch Owen has been selected and firms for an Aussie debut, continuing his rapid rise after a breakout BBL campaign with the Hobart Hurricanes.

Mitchell Marsh also returns to the squad as captain after a blistering IPL campaign, where he scored 627 runs for the Lucknow Super Giants.

Cameron Green, Cooper Connolly and Josh Hazlewood have been picked in the group, but there's no sign of Pat Cummins, Travis Head or Mitchell Starc, who will all fly back home after the Test series against the Windies.

"We have a busy T20 schedule coming up through this series, followed by three against South Africa and New Zealand and five matches against India at home as we continue to refine and build a squad we think will be the right fit for the World Cup on the subcontinent," chief selector George Bailey said in a statement.

"There are a number of players outside the squad who can still force their way into the mix for those upcoming Indian Series and through the Big Bash.

"The connection, role development and combinations we will have as options are growing nicely as we build towards the World Cup.

"It's an exciting time in our T20 space."

The series begins on July 21, which follows straight after the three-game Test series.
