Heat skipper Short calls time on career

Brisbane Heat's WBBL championship-winning captain Kirby Short has announced her retirement.

The 33-year-old called time on her 15-year cricketing career on Thursday following the Queensland Fire's exit from the Women's National Cricket League.

Short led the Heat to the WBBL titles in the past two seasons and said the victory in front of a home crowd at Allan Border Field in December to go back-to-back stands out as a career highlight.

"The sense of pride associated with lifting a trophy in front of a hill filled by our family and enthusiastic supporters, following a very consistent season of team performances, will always hold a special place in my heart and mind," she said.

Since debuting in 2005-06, Short has played 72 one-day matches for Queensland, 49 Twenty20 games for the Fire and 67 WBBL appearances for the Heat.
