Adelaide Strikers have poached former England cricket captain Charlotte Edwards from Perth for the upcoming women's Big Bash League.

Top-order batsman Edwards, the most capped international women's cricketer of all time, joins from the Scorchers after leading the team to last season's semi-finals.

Edwards scored four half centuries in her 2015-16 WBBL campaign as Perth fell one short of the final, losing the penultimate match to Sydney Thunder.

The right-hander has represented England in 23 Tests, 191 one-day internationals and 95 Twenty20 matches, averaging 32.97 in the shortest form at a strike rate of 106.94.

She is also the leading run-scorer in women's ODI history and was the women's cricketer of the year in 2008.

"I'm really excited about this opportunity with the Strikers, especially with the growth of women's cricket in Australia at an all-time high," Edwards, 36, said.

"The WBBL has gone from strength to strength."
