India captain Virat Kohli's legend continues to grow after he broke another global batting record at the World Cup.

Kohli became the fastest player in cricket history to 20,000 international runs across all formats as he compiled 72 to guide India to victory over the West Indies at Old Trafford.

That knock was his 417th international innings, some 36 innings faster than the previous joint record holders Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara.

The speed of the milestone is made even more remarkable by its arrival in the Twenty20 era, which has contributed 62 innings to his total.

Kohli is the twelfth batsman in history to reach the mark and third Indian after Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

Earlier in the tournament, Kohli raised his 11,000th ODI run, also in record time. After achieving that feat, Wide World Of Sports' Mark Taylor paid tribute to Kohli's hunger for runs that stems from his love of the game.

"Virat Kohli just loves playing cricket. He just loves being out there," Taylor said.

"Captaining your cricket-mad country must be awesome and you can see he genuine enjoys it.

"He wants to do well and to showcase what he can do all the time."
