English carnage continues as fast bowler Gus Atkinson limps off with hamstring injury

England quick Gus Atkinson is in doubt to return to the Boxing Day Test after suffering a hamstring injury while bowling on Saturday morning.

The fast bowler reached for the back of his left leg immediately after the last delivery of the 10th over and looked in significant discomfort.

Atkinson immediately left the field and was replaced in the attack by Ben Stokes.

England's official word is hamstring "soreness", with an assessment yet to be made on the severity.

If he has strained the hamstring, his Ashes campaign is almost certainly over.

Atkinson bowled 14 overs on day one, taking the wickets of Travis Head and Usman Khawaja. He then had to bat later in the afternoon, making 28 off 35 deliveries.

Given how quickly this match has been moving, Atkinson was once again bowling on day two, before succumbing to the injury.

He joins Mark Wood (knee) and Jofra Archer (side strain) as English quicks injured during this Ashes tour.

Atkinson replaced Archer for the Boxing Day Test, after being left out in Adelaide.

Australia lost six wickets before lunch on day two in Melbourne, with every chance the Test will be completed inside of two days.
