England cricket great Andrew Flintoff has been rushed to hospital after a horror crash while filming an episode of the popular television show Top Gear.

"Freddie was injured in an accident at the Top Gear test track this morning – with crew medics attending the scene immediately," the BBC said in a statement.

"He has been taken to hospital for further treatment and we will confirm more details in due course."

The accident occurred at the Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey. Temperatures in the area had plunged to freezing when the program was being filmed.

The Sun reports Flintoff's injuries are "not life-threatening."

"He was driving on the track as normal. He wasn't going at high speeds - it was just an accident that could happen to anyone," a source told The Sun.

"All the usual health and safety measures were in place for filming too.

"Filming has been postponed for now and all anyone cares about is Freddie recovering."

It's the second serious crash for the former England captain since he joined Top Gear. In 2019 he escaped from a 200km/h accident in a three-wheeled cycle car.

Flintoff was the player of the series in England's drought-breaking 2005 Ashes win over Australia. He played the last of his 79 Tests in 2009.
