Yohan Blake faces fresh challenge to disappointing Commonwealth bronze

After Yohan Blake somehow failed to take out the top honours in the Commonwealth Games 100-metre final, the second fastest man ever is now staring down a challenge to his bronze medal.

The Jamaican, who spent much of his career in Usain Bolt’s shadow, was poised to claim Gold after his compatriot retired from the sport last year.

Yet, last night a botched start saw Blake struggle to find his stride, giving up valuable ground to his competitors.

Blake was forced into damage control as he clawed back the competition to cross the line for third behind South Africa’s Akani Simbine (gold) and Henricho Bruinjies (silver).

However, images circulated online of the photo-finish that was required to split Blake and Nigerian Seye Ogunlewe (for third and fourth respectively), have stirred up further strife for the Jamaican.

In the photo Ogunlewe seemingly pips Blake at the line and fans took to twitter to express their derision of the official placings.

After achieving the same time, Commonwealth Games officials awarded the bronze to Blake for his quicker reaction-time off the blocks, and the fact his torso crossed the line, as per the official rules, ahead of Ogunlewe who only had his head and leg across the line.

The commotion did little to sully Blake however who was visibly distraught with his missed opportunity.

“I was stumbling all the way and I didn’t recover from it,” he said.

“I’ve been feeling good and it was not to happen today.

“I’m disappointed because I’ve been feeling good. I didn’t get the start and I was all over the place. I couldn’t recover from it.

“I couldn’t catch the field as I wanted to. I was supposed to take this (race) very easily because I was ready and feeling good. It was just never meant to be I guess.

It was the first time in 20 years the 100m crown was not retained by a Caribbean nation.
