College baseball pitcher banned after pole-axing rival player rounding bases

Things got a little heated during a college baseball game between North Central Texas College and Weatherford College.

Following a home run hit by first baseman Josh Phillips to give NCTC the lead, Weatherford pitcher Owen Woodward reacted with venom when the runner shouted something at Woodward as he rounded the bases.

As he rounded third, Woodward launched himself at the rival player and hit him with a shoulder charge, flooring his opponent.

The incident didn't lead to a brawl but the game was suspended. The school released a statement condemning Woodward's actions, saying the pitcher may get expelled as a result.

"We are completely embarrassed by this incident, and we apologise to North Central Texas College and the fans of WC baseball," Weatherford head coach Jeff Lightfoot said.

"This type of behaviour cannot be tolerated."

Phillips, who hit the home run, was reportedly suspended two games for "taunting" while Woodward was banned for four games.

Umpires reportedly said the player had shouted an expletive at Woodward as he rounded the bases, the second time he had done so during the game.
