Australian boxer Billy Dib's audacious attempt to cause a shock against Amir Khan has ended in embarrassing fashion after he was stopped in just the fourth round of the bout.

Dib, who has previously fought three weight classes below Khan as a super-featherweight, was overwhelmed by Khan, and he was saved when his corner threw in the towel, saving the Sydney native from serious injuries.

The 33-year-old had originally been slated to fight on Khan's undercard, but after the British star's original opponent suffered a car accident, Dib stood in as a replacement.

Khan reportedly earned $12 million for making light work of Dib in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, and paid credit to the brave Aussie.

"I want to thank Billy and his team for taking this fight on such short notice," Khan said after the win.

"I felt very comfortable in there. I slowed down a little bit instead of rushing all the time, I was seeing everything.

"Billy, we have to give credit to him, he is a two-time world champion, he put up a great fight."

However, while Khan was complimentary of the 50-1 underdog, boxing fans all over the world were less thrilled with the showcase.
