Big wave surfer shoots the pier

When it comes to high risk surfing Hawaiian big wave charger Laird Hamilton has long been a bar setter.

Whether it be tow surfing monster waves at Tahiti's Teahupo'o or the massive outer reef walls of water at Hawaii's "Jaws", Hamilton has forged a reputation as one of the world's best watermen.

And while it's been a while since he's blown minds, the veteran natural footer was up to his old tricks this week riding the powerful swells of Hurricane Marie at LA's famed Malibu.

As this footage shows, Hamilton leaves onlookers in awe as he rides a perfect 6 foot-plus wave on a standup paddleboard.

But while the wave is impressive enough, it's his penchant for high risk that is most impressive as he casually shoots the Malibu pier - riding straight between the pylons as the wave surges through the structure.

Had he come unstuck, or hit a pylon, Hamilton would have suffered serious injury if not been maimed.

But as so often happens he handles the situation with consummate ease for a perfect ride.
