Basketballer scores in own hoop to lose game

A basketball player was left heartbroken after accidently tipping the ball into his own hoop to gift his rivals victory in the final seconds of a US college game.

Playing in an intra-state clash against the Florida State Seminoles, Florida Gators defender Jacob Kurtz committed the rare blunder in the most painful of circumstances.

With three seconds left on the clock and the scores locked at 63-all, Kurtz positioned himself under his own basket to foil a hoop attack from Seminoles rival Devon Bookert.

Bookert's three point shot missed, but cruelly for Kurtz his attempt to tip away the ball went awry, sending it into his own basket.

Despite initial confusion whether the play would count, Florida State were correctly awarded the two points, which proved enough to win the game.

"That was crazy," Florida State guard Montay Brandon told the Associated Press.

"I thought he had a rebound. I guess it just slipped out of his hand. I don’t know how to explain it, but I was just happy.

"At first I was looking around like, did that happen? Then I saw the scoreboard change and I was like, oh man, we’re winning. I started going crazy."

Before the win, the Gators had claimed five straight victories over Florida State, making the mishap even tougher to swallow.
