Ben Simmons has suffered the first loss of his college basketball career, but the Australian was still the best on court.

Simmons' Louisiana State University suffered a one-point loss to Marquette, however the 19-year-old lit up the court with a game-high 21 points and 20 rebounds.

The Aussie hopeful also provided seven assists, while capturing two steals for his team at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn.

Simmons, the son of New York-born NBL star forward-centre Dave Simmons, is tipped to be the No.1 pick in next year's NBA draft.

If he reaches such status, he would become an instant multi-millionaire with a $US6 million ($A8.35 million) first-year NBA salary and millions more in other endorsements.
